Product Description
In plasma, estradiol binds primarily to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and also to albumin, with only a portion having free and biological activity. Female serum estradiol measurements primarily reflect ovarian activity. During pregnancy, estrogen levels, including estradiol, steadily rise to full term. Estradiol increases due to placenta production.
In adult premenopausal women, estrogen ovarian production is stimulated by luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) during the menstrual cycle. In adult women, estradiol levels are measured in fertility and menstrual irregularities, and ovarian follicular function is monitored during induction of ovulation. In females, estradiol acts as a growth hormone for reproductive organ tissues. The development of female secondary sexual characteristics is driven by estradiol. Estradiol is also involved in male fertility. Estradiol regulates bone maintenance. Postmenopausal women experience accelerated bone loss due to relative estrogen deficiency.
