Rosmarinic acid

Latin Name: Melissa officinalis L.

Synonyms: Lomon Balm Extract; Bea Balm Extract.

Description: Rosmarinic is a natural phenol antioxidant carboxylic acid found in many Lamiaceae herbs used commonly as culinary herbs such as lemon balm, rosemary, oregano, sage, thyme and peppermint. Chemically, rosmarinic acid is an ester of caffeic acid with 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl lactic acid. It is currently being studied for its effects on Alzheimer's Disease and some other diseases.

Function:

1. Anti-oxidant. The antioxidant activity of rosmarinic acid is stronger than that of vitamin E.

2. Anti-inflammatory;

3. Breaks-up amyloid-beta conglomerates of Alzheimer's Disease
in laboratory studies;

4. Anti-viral: with effects against Herpes Simplex;

5. The Spanish Sage variety of the herb also has acetylcholine esterase inhibiting properties.
