Physiological effects:
Several studies have demonstrated thatresveratrol is an effective antioxidant . It inhibits lipid peroxidation of low-densitylipoprotein (LDL), prevents the cytotoxicity of oxidized LDL, and protects cellsagainst lipid peroxidation . It is thought that because it contains highlyhydrophilic and lipophilic properties, it can provide more effective protectionthan other well-known antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E .
The groups of Howitz and Sinclair reported in 2003 in the journal Nature thatresveratrol significantly extends the lifespan of the yeast Saccharomycescerevisiae. Later studies conducted by Sinclair showed that resveratrol alsoprolongs the lifespan of the worm Caenorhabditis elegans and the fruit flyDrosophila melanogaster. In 2007 a different group of researchers was able to reproduce theSinclair's results with C. elegans
In 1997 Jang reported that topical resveratrolapplications prevented the skin cancer development in mice treated with a carcinogen. There have since been dozens of studies of the anti-cancer activityof resveratrol in animal models but no results of human clinical trials forcancer have been reported. In vitro resveratrol interacts with multiplemolecular targets, and has positive effects on the cells of breast, skin,gastric, colon, esophageal, prostate, and pancreatic cancer, and leukemia.
