RU58841 is an androgen receptor blocker. It binds to androgen receptors with great specificity and tenacity, but does not activate the receptor. Its presence on the receptor prevents androgens such as DHT from binding to and activating the receptor. It has been extensively studied as a topical agent to treat acne and androgenetic alopecia (1, 2, 3).

Androgenetic alopecia, or male-pattern balding, is caused by DHT binding to androgen receptors in the hair follicles. Over time, in susceptible individuals, the activation of the androgen receptors causes the hair follicles to stop producing normal hair and to undergo a process called miniaturization. In laboratory studies, RU58841 has been shown to be quite effective in competing against DHT for access to the androgen receptors.

RU58841 is a specific androgen receptor antagonist or a so called anti-androgen. This non steroidal topical androgen antagonist was investigated for therapeutic value in androgenetic alopecia and acne. In studies and clinical trials RU58841 has shown to;

Strongly compete against DHT
Increase cellular replication rate in the matrix cells
Increase cellular proliferation of outer root sheeth cells
Increase hair diameter and hair density
Increase the percentage of hair in the anagen phase
Provide equivalent or better net growth than Finasteride

RU58841 works by binding to the androgen receptor in the hair follicle. Therefore androgens don't have the chance to bind and start the chain reaction of androgenetic alopecia and begin the so called miniaturization process. It has been demonstrated to interrupt this hair loss message locally so that normal hair growth could continue.

Topical RU58841 has a very short half-life (1 hr) in comparison to the oral ingestion of Finasteride (6 hrs) and Dutasteride (5 weeks!). Moreover, RU58841 does not inhibit DHT production like the latter two products. These facts seem to suggest that there is minimal chance of any serious or permanent side effects, and anecdotal evidence on the forums seems to support that. However, because many people are buying RU58841 from online sometimes unknown and unverified suppliers, there is no guarantee of any kind of safety at all. I am not planning to buy RU58841 online because of safety issues. The product is also quite expensive in comparison to Minoxidil or Finasteride.
