Stability
1. Colourless, transparent, viscous, oily liquid. Dissolves in water, also dissolves inorganic salts, is hygroscopic and readily decomposes in acidic or alkaline solutions. Smells like ammonia.

Chemically forms two salts by interaction with hydrogen chloride; produces HCONHCH3-HCl in non-polar solvents; (HCONHCH3)2-HCl in the absence of solvents; hardly interacts with sodium metal at room temperature. Hydrolysis occurs by the action of acids or bases. The rate of acid hydrolysis is formamide > N-methylformamide > N,N-dimethylformamide. The rate of basic hydrolysis is formamide-N-methylformamide > N,N-dimethylformamide.
