Description:Kava (Piper methysticum), the national drink of Fiji, is used in Polynesian cultures to soothe nerves and promote deep sleep. It also causes mild euphoria and can enhance dreams.
In at least seven high-quality clinical studies, kava has been helpful in the treatment of anxiety, nervousness, and stress in the general population and in menopausal women. Several trials have found kava to be just as effective as the bensodiazepine antianxiety drug oxazepam – without affecting concentration, alertness, or causing some of the more serious side effects associated with standard sedatives.
