Human lungs are the primary organ for respiration and are clinically relevant to many commonly seen pulmonary diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, and lung cancer. Human lung consists of several different types of cells, including airway epithelial cells (ciliated, basal, goblet, neuroendocrine and Clara cells), alveolar cells (type I cells, type II cells, and fibroblasts in the interstitium) and pulmonary vascular cells (endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, adventitial fibroblasts). Human primary lung cells provide a reliable model to accurately emulate the physiological properties of human lung in vivo. Thus, they can be applied in pharmacokinetic research for drug screening and test for toxicology. They are also good model for study pulmonary diseases, microbial infections and airway inflammations. Human pulmonary cells can be especially useful in the COVID pandemic situation. COVID-19 has shown to cause lung complications and increased susceptibility is associated with people who have chronic lung disease. Furthermore, primary lung cells can be used to develop “lung-on-a-chip” model for respiratory disease and applied to pharmacological studies. Lung cells provide a good model for study intact lung functions and physiological properties under different conditions.
