Human Bronchial Epithelial cells (HBEpC), or bronchial epithelium, are composed of various specialised cell types including basal, ciliated and secretory cells. Bronchial epithelium is oriented in pseudostratified structure and forms the physical barrier between external environment and internal milieu. It plays a vital role in mucociliary clearance, directional ion transportation, and defending airway from noxious agent such as cigarette smoke, particulate, virus and bacteria. Bronchial epithelial cells are also able to release a variety of chemical mediators such as cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and arachidonic acid metabolites, which activate inflammatory cells to initiate immune and inflammatory responses. Studies have shown that when grown in liquid/air interface, primary human bronchial epithelial cells can be differentiated into a mucociliated tissue and serve as a 3D model to recapitulate the physiology function of normal airway epithelial in vitro.
