Hollow Composite Insulator

Composite hollow insulators are used for outdoor AC electrical equipment or indoors at rated voltages from 1 kV to 800 kV and frequencies up to 100 Hz, or for DC equipment at rated voltages of 1.5 kV and above. They are commonly used as current transformers and power transformers, circuit breakers, bushings, etc. and as housings (covers) for lightning arresters or other electrical equipment.
Due to their excellent mechanical properties, their flexibility, their relatively low weight compared to ceramic covers and their excellent electrical parameters, composite hollow insulators are preferably
for overhead installations (contamination classes I - IV), especially in seismically hazardous areas.

Composite hollow insulators (insulating sleeves) are made of glass epoxy resin tubes, fixed metal fittings at the tube ends and silicone rubber insulating sheaths. The tube is made of ECR glass fibres saturated with an epoxy resin composition. It is the support core of the insulator It is used to transmit mechanical loads (mainly bending loads and stresses, and sometimes torsional loads). The metal end joints are fixed to the tube ends with an epoxy resin adhesive with high mechanical and thermal strength. The silicone sleeve is injection moulded in LSR liquid silicone elastomer to protect the core from environmental influences The electrical properties of the insulator are also determined by the appropriate shape of the umbrella skirt.
