Fresh Onion

"Sceintific name Allium Cepa L., is widely available across India in 3 varieties viz. Red, White and Yellow Onion. High in Vitamin C, B6, folic acid and also a great source of dietary fibre. Supporting over 20% of world’s onion production, exports in the Onion trade has seen a massive growth in the last 10 years for India.

Onion is an important fresh vegetable consumed all over the world. India ranks first in acreage in the world covering about 480 thousand ha (21 per cent of the world area) and second in production after China, with over 15 million tons. Onion is produced in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar which together constitute around 70 percent of the area under onion.

Onion is the largest vegetable produced and consumed not only in India but also in the world. Although, it is classified as vegetable, it is mainly used in cuisines and culinary preparations. Onion is believed to have originated in Asia, though it is likely that onions may have been growing wild on every continent."
