Alfalfa, which is also called the “queen of feeds,” is the fourth most widely grown crop in the US (after corn, wheat, and soybeans).
One of the most important characteristics of alfalfa is its high nutrition quality for animal feed.
Alfalfa contains from 18% to 24% of crude protein and is also an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. In particular, alfalfa contains vitamins A, D, E, K, U, C, B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, pantothenic acid, inositol, biotin, and folic acid. Alfalfa also contains the following minerals: phosphorus, calcium, potassium, sodium, chlorine, sulfur, magnesium, copper, manganese, iron, cobalt, boron and molybdenum and trace elements such as nickel, lead, strontium, and palladium. Alfalfa is also consumed by people in the form of alfalfa sprouts. Alfalfa juice is used in some healthy foods.
Alfalfa hay is used mainly as feed for dairy cows, as well as for horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, turkeys, and other farm animals.
