Ajowan Essential Oil

Ajowan Oil is obtained from the seed of the herb Caum Ajowan. These seeds are very small, egg-shaped and nearly gray in color. The taste of ajowan is pungent and bitter and its oil is known to have germicidal, spasmodic, antiseptic, digestive, expectorant as well as tonic properties. Owing to its special properties it is used in toothaches, whooping cough, gas, bronchitis, skin disease, diarrhea as well as cholera.

The seed is cultivated in black soil majorly along riverbank in countries such as India, Egypt Iran and Afghanistan; though India is believed to be a native place for ajovan oil it is widely refined in other mentioned countries also.

The plant is quite small, erect as well as annual shrub which has soft fine hair. Ajowan oil is known to be almost colorless to liquid which is almost brown in color. It has a particular odour as well as a sharp hot taste which makes it a vital ingredient in various recipes; especially in India, it is widely used as an important component of a curry powder.
