In 1664 Henry Jermyn, Earl of St Albans, obtained a grant of land from King Charles II and permission to develop a residential neighbourhood. The site included an area that would come to be known as Piccadilly and a nearby street was given the Earl's name. Today Jermyn Street is synonymous the world over for the very finest shirt-making traditions and has become a place of pilgrimage for connoisseurs of the classic British shirt.
