Isotretinoin powder works by shrinking the sebaceous glands, which reduces grease (sebum) production in the skin. Cutibacterium acnes bacteria proliferate in hair follicles due to grease (formerly known as Propionibacterium acnes). This causes inflammation and acne. By reducing grease production by up to 90%, there are far fewer C. acnes bacteria in the skin and significantly less inflammation.
